9/27/2007  What a fantastic day at the 22nd Annual Fly-In and Car Show. Sunday the 23rd set a record for show cars by 10:45 AM and then went on to break it. Over 300 show cars jammed the fields, parking lots and driveways of the Airport proper and the Phonon Lot (next door).
"We were turning show cars away and really didnt want to do that", said gate-master Rob Riddell. "After finding a little more space, we re-opended the main gate". The Clams played tunes, the top ten winners were presented their trophies and the day was complete.
Two hundred planes, and 8,000 spectators turned out with the show cars to celebrate the first day of Autumn.
The Club wants to hear from anyone who may have suggestions to improve the show for 2008. In the mean time, remember to put this show on your calendar for next year! Contact info@valleyclassicwheels.com to speak your peace.

9/12/2007  The Simsbury Flying Club, in conjunction with The Valley Classic Wheels Car Club will host the 22nd Annual Fly-In and Car Show on Sunday, September 23rd.

Trophies will be awarded by the VCWCC to the top ten vote-getters when the peoples choices are tallied.
Breakfast and Lunch will be available. Show Cars are asked for $10.00 for registration and may arrive anytime after 8 am on Sunday. Last year, we had over 200 show cars attend, so come early for a good parking spot. This year, there will be show cars entering the Phonon Lot from Wolcott as well as the "parade" through the field entrance, starting around 10 am. SEE YOU THERE!

6/10/2007  Valley Classic Wheels 6th Annual Show, Sunday July 8, 2007.  It’s show time in the Farmington Valley! Can you believe that the Valley Classic Wheels Car Show is right around the corner? That’s right, it’s just about time to hold our 6th annual charity benefit car show on Iron Horse Blvd in lovely downtown Simsbury CT. Last year we had about 400 American Classics, Muscle Cars, Sports Cars and Street Rods. As a result of that successful show, the Valley Classic Wheels raised over $4,000, with the proceeds going to local charitable campaigns. Were hoping to better those number this year, both attendance and money raised. If you have a classic car, you are most welcome to come and display it, along with hundreds of other car fans.

Hey, campers... the first car show we heard about was "snowed-rained-out" and looks now to be held Sunday, April 22 at Hammonaset State Park. The calendar says the season begins towards the end of April, and many look foward to the Berlin, CT fairgrounds show hosted by the Summer Knights. Also, on the same Sunday is the long-time running Chevy Show at Carter Chevy in Manchester, CT. LETS GET THE snow off the road and the SHOW ON THE ROAD, Mr. Weatherman....

The VCWCC joins with all of its "brothers in vehicles" throughout Connecticut and the greater area in expressing its sorrow in learning of the passing of Lou Avitabile.

Friend of The Club, Thunderbird Lou reports:

I got a phone call this evening from Louie Avitabiles Daughter-in-law that he passed away today.  At least his suffering is over.  She didnt know any plans yet said she would be in touch later.  She said the obituary was going to be in as many papers as they could but asked me if I knew any of his car buddies, only problem .. some by first names or just nick names and car descriptions.   I dont know if you have a way of contacting any club members that may of know him.  If we dont have bad weather Id like to take the bird out .  Ill wait and see.  Thank you in advance for any help. He will be greatly missed. I plan on attending the funeral tomorrow (hopefully with the bird) Louie Jr. said that he was able to locate 2 of his dads old cars and they will be on loan, he figured that everybody had put away their cars for the winter so no use asking anyone its January. I hope God willing not to disapoint him.
Sincerely,
Louise

The Holidays are upon us. There is no stopping the calendar. We will have to get out the fuel stabilizers and do the right thing. It is invevitable. Now that you are resigned to the winter coming, keep an eye out for the cool winter activites that the Valley Classic Wheels Car Club has planned for 2007. In the works are trips to The Boston World of Wheels Car Show in January, and a special meeting at Manchester Motor Cars in February. Happy Holidays and make them safe.

10/13/2006  Please make it a point to attend the first annual "Cartober Fest" this Sunday in New Hartford. Go to our EVENTS calendar and check out the details. The show should be the warmer of the two days this weekend, if you follow that stuff. As the calendar moves along, this may be our last chance at a nice day with our cars to get out before the cold settles in on our hobby.

10/4/2006  Please join The Club at The Simsbury Fly-In and Car Show this Sunday. What has been "dampened" by the weather for the past two weeks, shall go on Sunday, October 8th.   6/28/2006

GEEZE, will somebody do something about all this RAIN. The VCWCC is prepared for an onslaught of vehicles, nice weather and big crowds because we trust that we will once again be blessed with a great day for our event. We are expecing large crowds because of all the pent-up feelings associated with being rained out of all the other great events. We are happy to say that the Simsbury show does not have to deal with wet fields like some other shows where rainfall leading up to the event becomes an issue. Lets all hope that this weather system will change its course for the sake of all the car shows that are planned around our tiny window of cruisin time. See you at the shows!

6/20/2006  Click here for our flyer with information on our FIFTH ANNUAL BENEFIT CAR SHOW coming  July 9th.

5/12/2006  There has been a flurry of activity within the club of late. Just this week we have welcomed two new members. Our  interests are as varied as the cars we collect and drive. Why not join with us and celebrate the auto, meet new people, and have fun putting on a great car show that raises money for charity? Just click on the link on the home page. See you soon.

5/12/2006  The VCWCC and Renos host Cruise Nights on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Starting around 5:30, the informal gatherings go on until dusk. Each week, Reno picks his favorite car for the cruise and awards a trophy. There will also be gift certificates awarded. Renos is located on Route 315 between Simsbury and Tariffville (in the old Geminis) off of Route 10/202 (Hopmeadow Street) just south of Wagner Ford/Nissan. All cars, trucks, and bikes are welcome. There is no charge.

12/27/2005  As we all look foward to the 2006 Car Show Season, let us take a look at where we have been in 2005.  Here is a listing in chronological order for the VCW Car Club 2005 Activities:

Our first scheduled official Club outing of 2005 was to attend the Boston World of Wheels Car Show, Saturday, January 8, 2005. Our trip was thwarted by a major snow storm. It was decided that we had too much to chance due to the weather. One Club Member attended.

The Eastern States Exposition [The Big E] Indoor Swap Meet, January 15/16, 2005

Frank Maratta’s Car and Motorcycle Show (a decades-long running commercial car show) February 4, 5 & 6, 2005. Club members attend these events to warm away the winter doldrums

New England Trucking Museum, April 2, 2005.  The Club organized a field trip to The New England Trucking Museum, in Middlebury, CT. We spent a few hours pouring over the many restored rigs on display.

Ty-Rods Car Club Swap Meet, April 10, 2005.  Long standing Ty-Rods Car Club, holds their swap meet at Stafford Springs Race Track. A big event (usually cold, too) it is the un-official start of the season.

CSRA Spring Swap Meet, May 1, 2005.  Held by the Connecticut Street Rod Association, proceeds benefit local and state charities. Held at a local amusement park, it is the largest swap meet in the State. Club members set up a club vendor spot and participated in the day-long event.

The Simsbury Memorial Day Parade, May 31, 2004.  Show cars from the Valley Classic Wheels Car Club join in for the town parade. Club vehicles carried WWII and Korean Vets.

The Fourth Annual Valley Classic Wheels Benefit Car Show, Simsbury, CT, July 10, 2005.  This is our primary fundraising event. We are very proud of our efforts. We grossed just shy of $10,000 dollars for the day. The show generated its monies from vendor fees, show car participant registrations, walk-in spectator donations and our large raffle prizes. Donations of the prizes were a television set from a local appliance store, custom jewelry, an airplane ride, and many other items that were part of a “tea cup auction”. The printing costs associated with our [enclosed] brochure were donated by Arrowhead Printing. [Over $1,000.00 in value.] The Nation’s first FM radio station, WDRC, donated over sixty, 30-second radio advertising spots the week before the event. On show day, the radio station set up a tent and van with give-a-ways and balloons, a $6,250.00 total value donation. They also did a live/remote on-air update at around 10:00 AM. The other impressive totals were the nearly one thousand people that came in through the gates and the record 366 show vehicles on display.Swap

Meet with the Tri-State Mopar Club, August 7, 2005.  The VCWCC jointly held a swap meet at the Pleasant Valley Drive In-Movie Theatre in Pleasant Valley with the Tri-State Mopar Club. One of the two remaining drive in movie theatres in the state, the venue failed to command attendance due to a conflicting major car show on the same day, downstate.

Canton Lobster Fest, Friday August 19, 2005.  Local car show hosted by a restoration shop, to benefit the North Canton Volunteer Fire Department. The VCWCC attended in-force to support their cause.

New Hartford Peach Festival, August 20, 2005.  Mini Car Show to benefit Friendly Hands Food Bank of Litchfield County. A dismal day for a car show; drizzle and overcast, however, all spectator donations went directly to the Friendly Hands Food Bank.

McLean Village, September 4, 2005.  The Valley Classic Wheels Car Club staged a “mini” car show for the residents of the Village (an independent living community and a division of the nursing home, in Simsbury, CT). Twelve Club Members and 10 Club vehicles were on view for the residents of McLean.  Two other friends of The Club attended, each with their vehicles. The culmination of the event was a short parade, past the nursing home’s main entrance, to enable shut-in residents to see the cars from their vantage point. Now in its second year, the staff has asked us to make this an annual event for all the residents.

Cherry Brook Nursing Home, September 18, 2005.  Mini Car Show to benefit the residents of the Canton, CT facility. A dozen Club cars and their owners attended on the “national day for nursing homes” salute.

Roaring 20’s Benefit Car Show, September 18, 2005. Held to benefit the Southbury (CT) Training School, which helps mentally challenged young adults in Connecticut. Club Members attended the event early so they could also attend the event listed above.

The Simsbury Flying Club Fly-In and Car Show, September 25, 2005. The Valley Classic Wheels Car Club helps the Simsbury Flying Club host the car show portion of their singular annual fund raising event. This event was their 20th year, while the association with the VCWCC has continued now for its 3rd year. On the field were 203 classic vehicles.  The VCWCC presented the Flying Club with the $677 in proceeds to the non-profit group.

Lebanon Valley, New York, October 2, 2005. Lebanon Valley, New York Raceway “Nostalgia Drags and Car Show” A good club turn-out for a trip of one hour to see many 60’s vintage race cars. The Albany region car club gives its proceeds to (NY) area charities.

Cub Scouts Katrina Benefit Car Show, October 8, 2005. The New Hartford Troop held its first car show with the assistance of the Valley Classic Wheels Car Club. In their desire to help The American Red Cross raise monies for the Katrina Relief Fund, the troop gave all their proceeds to the American Red Cross. Turn out for the show was light, due to a rain date reschedule on the 9th.
CSRA Fall Swap Meet, November 6, 2004. Held by the Connecticut Street Rod Association, proceeds benefit local and state charities. Held at Lake Compounce Amusement Park, Southington, CT, it is the largest in the State. Club members attended.

A Final Note: The Valley Classic Wheels Car Club makes it a club tradition to personally present our checks to the selected charities rather than just mail a check to them.  The Valley Classic Wheels Car Club was very proud to be able to donate monetary funds to the following local and state charities in 2005:
Child and Family Services of Hartford
Chip In for a Cure for Cancer
Civil Air Patrol, East Granby
Connecticut Humane Society
Cub Scout Troop 17, New Hartford, CT

10/10/2005  The Valley Classic Wheels Car Club invites you to perform a random act of kindness: (This letter was written by Louise LaFreniere-Iagrosse, aka Thunderbird Lou) Dear Friends: Im on a "Card Campaign" and Im asking for your help. Im writing to ask you for your support for a friend of ours. Im sure you all remember Louie Avitabile from Southington Auto Parts/True Value on Route 10. When the old AJs closed he used to have cruise nights at his place every week. People used to come from all over the state. Hed have music, popcorn, ice cream and things for the kids to do. Hed end his cruise with his favorite song "The End" sung by Earl Grant 1959. I always think of him and that special send off song until the next week when wed do it all again. We all know he has Lou Gerhigs Disease and it would be so wonderful if he could receive pictures or just cards of encouragement from his many old car friends letting him know were still thinking about him. Im not asking you to go visit him there, although hed love it. I can only imagine how long every day must be not hearing from anyone from the outside except your family! At least with cards and photos he can look over them and remember us - thinking of him. I was always touched every new season when hed heard one of the "clan" lost their husband or wife and hed call that person over and present them with a plaque or trophy of some sort letting them know that their loved one was not forgotten - but instead remembered by the "family" of car enthusiasts that we ARE and then hed give them a big hug.

Id like to see us remember him before he leaves us. Is there a photo of you and your car or even just the car you could spare to send to him? A "Thinking of You" card or a post card from your vacation would be great to receive.  Please, let’s not forget him. This would be such a nice thing to do for a man who did so much for us. Thank You and God Bless You!

Send To: Sub acute Center of Bristol Lou Avitabile 23 Fair Street Forestville, CT 06010 Sincerely, Louise LaFreniere-Iagrosse aka Thunderbirdlou, "56" thunderbird
